Christian theology states that all of us humans killed Jesus Christ and that he had to die to redeem us all. I accept this responsibility but who where the agents of Jesus' death? Those who blame the Jewish people are wrong. Jesus was put to death by politicians.
In 33 A.D. Judea was a province of the Roman Empire, and a rich and prosperous province at that. Under Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor was the Tributary King Herod, son of that King Herod who had murdered all the babies in Bethlehem at Christmas time 33 years earlier. (Matthew was a Tax collector for King Herod before he went to work for Jesus.) The Roman Empire at this time practiced Religious tolerance. The Emperor Worship that started the great Jewish revolt of 77 A.D. had not yet been established. The Jews were allowed to practice their religion and operate their Temple as long as they were willing to accept Roman rule. The people who made up the Sanhedrin accepted this situation. After all, the Jews had been ruled by foreign conquerors before, and we all can't be Maccabees.
Question: What is it that ALL politicians in power want, no matter what their ideology?
Answer: Peace and quite in the streets and no interruption of the Tax Revenues.
So here comes Jesus. He is coming to Jerusalem to celebrate passover with about 400,000 other Jews. Jesus is a known trouble maker. Three years earlier he was bouncing people out of the Temple for Money changing and running a flea market in the forecourt. Since then there has been reports that Jesus can change water into wine. How much water would Jesus have to change to wine to get all 400,000 Jews in town in the mood for a Hockey Riot*? What would 400,000 drunk rowdy Jews do to the before mentioned goals of peace in the streets and uninterrupted Tax Revenues?
Forget the Holy stuff, this guy Jesus is bad news and he has got to go. So the politicians; Roman and Jew, got together, arranged a show trial and made an "example" of this man. This is Human Nature and one of the reasons Jesus came here in the first place. We are supposed to be better than this, but anyone who looks at History knows that politicians pull this stuff all the time.
"Force and Right rule the World: Force, til Right is ready."
